Mission Statement

VoteRiders is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to ensure that all citizens are able to exercise their right to vote. VoteRiders informs and helps citizens to secure their voter ID as well as inspires and supports organizations, local volunteers, and communities to sustain voter ID education and assistance efforts. Kathleen Unger founded VoteRiders in 2012 as a direct response to the increasing number of stringent voter ID laws across the country. Today, our team works alongside more than 930 partner organizations and over 5,800 volunteers (including an army of pro bono lawyers) across the country.

About This Cause

While voter registration is crucial, for so many eligible voters it is just not enough. There are 36 states with voter ID laws and more than 25 million voters who do not have current, government-issued photo ID. In addition, tens of millions of voters are so confused by complicated and ever-changing voter ID laws that they are highly unlikely to turn out to vote unless we proactively clarify the ID requirements for them. VoteRiders and our thousands of volunteers work with and through hundreds of voter registration organizations and community partners across the country to provide current and accurate voter ID information to these at-risk voters, as well as to provide free logistical, financial and legal assistance if they need help securing their ID including underlying required documents like a birth certificate. Individuals disproportionately impacted by voter ID laws are primarily those without a current driver’s license in their state: communities of color, students and young people, older adults who may no long be driving, voters with disabilities, people with low income, married women who have changed their name, and transgender voters. Our programs and services provide: 1) Individual Voter Assistance: We provide customized information and practical assistance with the transportation, documentation, and cost of securing ID to vote. 2) Voter ID Education: We inform people about voter ID requirements and clarify the widespread confusion about voter ID and its relationship to voter registration and other voting rights issues. 3) On-the-Ground Partnerships: We partner with local organizations to find, inform and help voters with voter ID, especially those most at risk of losing their right to vote.
