Mission Statement

The mission of Living Classroom is to inspire children to learn and value the natural world through garden-based education.

About This Cause

Living Classroom is a hands-on, comprehensive garden-based educational program that serves students over the course of 8 grade levels starting with Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade. We have delivered lessons to over 60,000 students since 2008. We create unique opportunities to give all children in the school districts we serve the opportunity to learn in an outdoor classroom environment through native habitat and edible gardens through hands-on, experiential instruction. Our goals are to grow the next generation of environmental stewards, build lifelong enthusiasm for science and math, and develop a love of healthy eating. Our hands-on lessons focus on science, math, nutrition and social studies. They correspond with the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Our lessons utilize the scientific method by including experimentation, hypothesis, observation analysis and recording of results. We align our lessons with the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core and thus meet the academic requirements for California teachers. Our gardens are ecological laboratories that provide beautiful and stimulating outdoor learning environments. We create and maintain edible and native habitat gardens on school campuses to provide venues for our lessons on topics ranging from plant life cycles to history and from ecology to ethnobotany, from photosynthesis to decomposition.
