Mission Statement

Our mission is to gift children, families and seniors nutritious food through access and in conjunction with nutrition education for their health and happiness. The tree of our logo symbolizes the intention for our efforts: May the HealthBarn Foundation be firmly rooted in the spirit of love; Let all its good deeds be the leaves on its branches; May the words of kindness form its flowers; and may peace and health be its fruits.

About This Cause

There are currently three initiatives that are being funded with generous support from the public including Healing Meals, Garden-to-Table Scholarships and School Nutrition. 1) Healing Meals is the first of its kind nutritious food gifting program currently available in Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey. Healing Meals provides nutritious meals for families with children undergoing treatment for cancer, serious blood disorders and sickle cell anemia distributed through Tomorrows Children’s Fund (TCF) at Hackensack University Medical Center, through Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, Paterson, NJ and also through Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. We have expanded our Healing Meals program to include seniors in need living at Ridgecrest Senior Housing and S.H.A.R.E., Inc. (Senior Housing Association of Ridgewood and Envrions) both located in Ridgewood, NJ. And, community members in need through Social Services of Ridgewood and vicinity. These nutritious meals are distributed through Tomorrows Children’s Fund at Hackensack University Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital as families leave the clinic after a long day of treatment and by social workers visiting low-income families with children in treatment at Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. By making the meals readily available to families through the hospital sets the bar high for quality and safety and creates a replicator model for hospitals across the country. We transport the nutritious meals and soups frozen to seniors and families in need at centralized locations for their pick-up. 2) Hands-On Nutrition Education Paves the Way for a Healthier Future. Garden-to-Table scholarships for summer camp at HealthBarn USA are available to children who require financial assistance and want the opportunity to learn how to live a healthy-lifestyle with the support of their families. The ultimate garden-to-table summer camp experience for children, ages 5-12 is held weekly from 9:00 – 3:00 p.m. and includes a naturally, nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack each day. The campers rotate between growing, harvesting and cooking with their own hand-grown produce; learning about nutrition and environmental sciences through games and activities; participating in natural arts and crafts; and being active through yoga and creative play. Nominations are provided by health professionals, including but not limited to pediatricians, schools nurses, social workers. 3) Creating a Healthy Learning Environment for Children to Thrive! Schools are taking the lead in educating their students about making healthy food and lifestyle choices through school-wide assemblies for children pre-k through 8th grade. Children are receptive to these healthy messages and influencing family food purchases at home! Teaching nutrition by tasting fresh, natural foods is what makes the difference. HealthBarn Foundation makes funding available for schools that need financial assistance for this interactive enrichment programs: School Assemblies: HealthBarn USA offers “Try It, You’ll Like It” and the Super Salad Bar assemblies for schools, camps and community organizations across the country. “Try It, You’ll Like It” brings the USDA MyPlate to life by learning to identify foods in the five food groups. Students are transformed into expert taste testers by giving their opinions with a thumb up if they like it, thumb to the side if they are not sure and a thumb down if they don’t like it. Nutrition education never tasted so good. Super Salad Bar is the perfect nutrition education adjunct to a school garden with an emphasis on agriculture. Students play the seasonal food game by identifying fruits and vegetables and the season they are harvested in followed by each student making their own super salad from the salad bar. School organizers apply for grants.
