Mission Statement

Open Future Institute aims to instigate system change in education and pave the way for the creation of a new foundational subject field - where human questions about identity, agency and purpose are the core of the learning process. It does so through its signature program, a semester long, credit bearing class for high schools across America: the QUESTion Class. The QUESTion Class fosters individuality and social responsibility in young people, allowing them to question themselves, each other and society to define their own purpose and direction in life. It anchors student experience with self-motivation and a strong foundation for academic achievement. Because the QUESTion Project brings the human side of students to the foreground, the class is not only transformative for students but also for teachers who teach the class. Students and educators alike thrive when the system makes more room for who we are as human beings and the things that matter in life. Armed with 21stcentury skills –communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and cross-cultural awareness –and grounded in self-knowledge, agency and purpose, students are better equipped to enter the workplace, achieve secure economic independence and become change-agents for the world at large.

About This Cause

"This project is important because it poses as a beacon of light to those who live in fear, doubt, trouble, question…The common question I hear and see is: “Why am I here”, “What am I going to do with my life”, “I give up”. Being from the Bronx, I never fully realized the negativity that creeks here day and night until I became independent, when I started going out into “The World”. All I see here is poverty, self-doubt, and such negativity. I started understanding what others felt because I felt what they were feeling, fear. Clueless and sad almost every day because I wasn’t satisfied with where I was living and who I was.Because of the introduction of the QUESTion Project my perspective on life did change into a more positive direction and has helped me as an individual extend my character into somebody better. This project will be important to many others who were like me at one point who are struggling to find out who they are as an individual and are struggling to find a sense of purpose in life”. Brandon, Student, Class 2016, Bronx, NYC, The Open Future Institute launched the QUESTion Class in 2013, in partnerhisp with students and educators of the NYC public school system. Since then we have reached thousands of students in some of the most underserved communities of our contry. Our partners are schools and principals who have a strong voice in the movement to reimagine public education. These educators see our programs as an innovative solution to addressing a fundamental lack in the education system.
