Mission Statement

Math at No Cost (MANC) supports the academic success of at-risk students from economically disadvantaged areas by providing them with free math resources in before- or after-school programs, in order to improve their quantitative skills and increase their enthusiasm towards math. Math at No Cost provides online access to a math intervention program, tutoring, math worksheets, use of iPads and whiteboard technology to positively impact students’ computational fluency, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving abilities.

About This Cause

Executive Summary In today’s increasingly technological society, competency in mathematics and quantitative thinking are essential. From being able to manage basic household expenses to avoiding economic exploitation, from operating a calculator or cash register to forecasting a company’s return on investment – strong math skills are more than just useful. They empower people to have more control over their own financial lives as workers and consumers, and they open doors to greater economic opportunities. Math at No Cost offers disadvantaged students the opportunity to expand their mathematical capabilities by providing access to supplementary learning resources in a before- and after-school format. In a supportive atmosphere, engaging with otherwise inaccessible technology tools, students build a greater mastery of math skills and an increased sense of math’s importance to their academic success. Educators work one-on-one and/or in small groups with 1st – 5th graders for an average of 37 minutes, 3 or 4 days a week, to reinforce and improve students’ math and reading capabilities. Using an online intervention product, iPads, Whiteboard technology, and worksheets, math lessons are made engaging and interactive through targeted assignments based on each student’s comprehension level. Students build confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment as they develop computational fluency, conceptual understanding, and better problem-solving skills. In the long-term vision, every grade level will have a weekly opportunity to access Math at No Cost’s program. Due to funding and resource constraints, the organization’s program is currently limited to 1st through 5th grades only; however, our goal in the five-year strategic plan is to expand to middle schools by 2016 and to high schools by 2018. Founded in West Garfield, Math at No Cost invests in a segment of Chicagoland’s youth that lack adequate resources and inspiration for academic achievement, particularly in math-related fields. Our students’ communities suffer crime rates well above the national average, and 62% of our students live at or below poverty level in neighborhoods where the unemployment rate is in double digits. In an environment of poverty and violence, more than 87% of Math at No Cost’s students call school their ‘safe-haven’. We are committed to providing this population with free math instruction and support, in order to empower these young people with skills and knowledge that will contribute to a better future. Our goal as an organization is to serve more at-risk areas of Chicago by 2016, and to expand beyond the Chicago market by 2017.
