Mission Statement

The Mission of SCARF is to raise funds to support the Shelby County Animal Shelter in safe adoptions, education and community outreach concerning abused and neglected animals, medical procedures, eliminating euthanasia of adoptable animals while maintaining best practices

About This Cause

SCARF was organized in 2012, after community members recognized a need for a group to represent and support abused and neglected animals in Shelby County. SCARF works to support the Shelby County Animal Shelter in their efforts to take care of dogs and cats in the shelter. SCARF’s involvement has resulted in decreased euthanasia to making it almost nonexistent. SCARF pays for immunizations and vet care for the animals at the shelter. SCARF works to collect donations on behalf of the shelter. These donations consisting of food, blankets, treats, cleaning supplies etc. SCARF has purchased needed items including washing machines, hot water heaters, fans etc. SCARF volunteers assist the shelter at their clinic, (low cost spay/neuter, low-cost immunization, feral cat program, and the microchip program. By grooming pets and walking dogs we help to keep them sociable and in good health. SCARF conducts adoption drives on behalf of the shelter both at the shelter and at local business. We help people find adoptable pets via support of the animal shelters adoption process and the utilization of petfinder.com. The adoption process includes an adoption application that requires providing proof of home owners insurance, and wither proof of home ownership, or permission from a landlord to have a pet in the rental property. SCARF educates the public to the need for immunizations with an annual “Walk to end Parvo” and the low-cost pet immunizations clinics; and to the need for population control with the support of the Animal Shelters’ low cost spay/neuter clinics and the Feral Cat T-N-R clinics. SCARF works to re-unite persons with their lost pets by supporting the Shelters’ micro-chip program and with a lost and found process on Facebook. Various fundraisers are conducted each year as well, Cans for Canines, Dimes for Dogs & Cats, Top Pet Calendar and a Lip-sync Contest. SCARF was able to successfully run a multimillion dollar capital campaign that enabled the construction of a new animal shelter in Shelby county, the new shelter has more than doubled the capacity to care for and rehome the needy pets of our county. The shelter now has designated areas for both dogs and cats, as well a meet and great areas, and a community room that is used for shot clinics, and educational purposes.
