Undies for Everyone's mission is to provide children in crisis with new underwear, recognizing the importance of this small basic need as part of a child’s increased chances for long-term success.

About This Cause

Undies for Everyone: An Overlooked Problem with a simple solution. "When a social worker mentioned to Rabbi Amy Weiss that disadvantaged children lack new underwear, she wrote a post for her Houston Chronicle blog, striking a chord with readers who responded by donating packages of undies. Four years later in 2012 Undies for Everyone became a 501(c)3 organization focusing full-time on the basic and universal unmet need of providing underwear for impoverished children. Undies for Everyone is the only nonprofit organization in the United States solely focused on addressing underwear insecurity for children in crisis. 2017 was a turning point for Undies for Everyone when the organization temporarily pivoted to disaster relief in response to Brené Brown’s FB Live video, highlighting the dramatic increased need for underwear during a disaster. In the months following Hurricane Harvey, UFE provided 400,000 men, women and children with 2 million pairs of new underwear. In 2019, UFE expanded to Dallas, Ft. Worth, Austin, and SanAntonio, providing underwear for over 300,000 children. Undies for Everyone’s steep trajectory of growth from 9,000 pairs distributed in 2012 to over 500,000 pair distributed in 2020 demonstrates UFE’s management abilities and children’s great need for underwear. Parents living in poverty are less able to invest in their children’s “development and well-being,” according to an Academic Journal of Pediatrics article linking poverty and well-being - a generalized description of parents’ inability to provide for their children. The issue is more directly addressed in a commissioned study by JCPenney that found “46% of parents living in poverty say that underwear is among the clothing items that tend to be the hardest to find or get for their child(ren).” The COVID 19 pandemic brought permanent programming changes to UFE. Recognizing the increasing number of financially at risk families, UFE created strategic partnerships to provide a week’s supply (7 pair) of underwear to children in crisis. In 2021, 105,000 US children in 15 cities will each receive 7 pairs of underwear (a total of 738,000 pairs), one of the least accessible basic needs for impoverished children. UFE partners with federally mandated school district HomelessDepartments, Child Protective Services, children’s hospital pediatric mobile units, and food bank children’s programs that distribute the underwear to clients before school begins in the fall. UFE serves children in Washington DC, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Albuquerque, Miami, St. Louis, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Harlingen (Rio Grande Valley), Houston, Dallas, Austin, Ft. Worth and San Antonio.
