Mission Statement

The mission of the Pratyush Sinha Foundation is to assist local communities in achieving health and harmony through yoga and mindfulness programs. PSF believes that every child has the potential to become a healthy, happy and conscious citizen of the world. We believe that we can create healthier communities by teaching children skills that will help them cope with social, economic and environmental factors.

About This Cause

Through yoga and mindfulness, PSF offers transformative life skills training in schools (during the school day and afterschool), summer programs, community programs, recovery centers and prisons. From 35 children when PSF first started in 2012, our programs have reached over 12,000 Lehigh Valley children, adolescents and adults as of 2019. We have grown from one teacher offering two free after-school club classes to 13 teachers offering programs during the school day and after school, and at recovery and community centers and prisons. PSF will address toxic stress and trauma as barriers to learning in the Greater Lehigh Valley, using Mindfulness Interventions (supported by 35 years of research), such as those developed by Mindful Schools (MS). Mindfulness will positively impact: Cognitive Skills (attention, grades); social-emotional skills (emotional regulation, in-school behavior, empathy, social skills); and well-being (test anxiety, stress, post-traumatic symptoms). The MS curriculum is designed specifically for under-resourced public schools facing high turnover and toxic stress. Practices include helping students focus, respond instead of react to challenges, and verbalize needs in pro-social ways. Development of mindfulness – moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, emotions, sensations and environment – will improve students’ ability to manage challenges. We expect that Mindfulness will create calmer classrooms by providing tools that students and teachers can use to de-escalate stressful situations. Use of self-regulation techniques will lead to students spending more time on-task and fewer discipline referrals. Our experience of working closely with the schools at elementary, middle and high school levels, as outside providers of yoga and mindfulness has provided us with invaluable experience and understanding. St. Luke’s University Hospital, Communities in Schools of the Lehigh Valley, the Angela Pessina Memorial Fund, Air Products, Baker Foundation, Casa Guadalupe, the Trexler Trust, United Way of Lehigh Valley, Lululemon’s Here to Be grant and the Pennsylvania Department of Education have recognized PSF’s work through support or partnership. We will continue building partnerships with community organizations, funders, businesses, health networks, school districts and residents to strengthen our capacity to offer mindfulness and yoga throughout the Lehigh Valley.
