Mission Statement

Powerhouse Arts (PHA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Our purpose-built facility hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the wellbeing of artists and the communities to which they belong. PHA envisions a society in which creative expression is celebrated and supported as central to personal and civic development. Our vision for impact is rooted in: People as an infinite spring of creativity: In shared spaces of exploration, communities imagine new realities for themselves and their neighbors. PHA collaborates with individuals and organizations to support the creative lives of New Yorkers. Making as a collective practice of possibility: When we make, we experiment, explore, expand, and evolve. Making is a process of dreaming of new possibilities for ourselves and our communities, thus, igniting potential transformation. Social justice as a practice of PHA: Culture thrives where justice flourishes. As a creative hive, we foster an environment where people feel inspired and empowered to explore and create within and beyond our walls.

About This Cause

Located in a purpose-built facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the wellbeing of artists and the communities to which they belong. The project builds on Brooklyn’s 200-year history as a center for industry and creates a needs-responsive platform and a critical new resource for artists in the heart of the borough. The organization stewarded the redevelopment of the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station in Gowanus to create a new facility that houses fabrication facilities for ceramics, print, and public art, activated by PHA, in addition to facilities for textiles, small metals, and large metals, which will be leased to aligned organizations and businesses in the future. The building also houses multi-use facilities for education, events, and public engagement. Program Areas Fabrication: PHA offers three fee-based fabrication services: Ceramics, Print, and Public Art. The organization’s in- house production facilities and expert fabrication teams help artists produce work in a safe environment, in a more cost effective and collaborative way than typical studio buildings can accommodate. Community Ceramics Studio: The Community Ceramics Studio is PHA’s ceramics membership program, offering artists access to workspace, materials, equipment not accessible elsewhere, and professional assistance. Community Engagement & Partnerships: PHA provides skill-building workshops, community events (including public art projects), and work-based learning, including internships in creative manufacturing, facilities, and arts administration. In 2024, we are launching our annual Community Day of Discovery Community Day of Discovery, free and open to all to discover PHA, fabrication, and new ways of making. Our Conversation Series is also launching this year, providing an intimate and lively exploration of the creative process through insightful dialogues designed by PHA fabricators, staff, and collaborating artists. In 2025, we will launch our artist residencies and fellowships in fabrication. Space Hosting: PHA invites mission- and values-aligned artists and organizations to partner in activating the building as a hive of creative expression. The organization oversees a Private Event Rental program for short-term venue rentals to values-aligned partners. The organization also hosts creative manufacturers and aligned nonprofit organizations as longer-term stewards who contribute to the collaborative community, provide access to other artists and types of fabrication, and value resource-sharing.
