Mission Statement
The Portland Montessori School, formerly Providence Montessori School, has over a 50-year history of educating Portland’s children according to the Montessori educational method.
About This Cause
The Portland Montessori School guides each child’s joyful quest to reach his or her intellectual, spiritual, social and emotional potential within a diverse, nurturing learning community as we adhere to the Montessori principles of the Association Montessori Internationale. We currently serve approximately 170 students with our thriving primary program for ages 2 1/2 through 6 and our growing elementary program for grades 1 through 6. We also offer before and after care as well as holiday and summer camps. Our school hours are from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, with before and after care hours extending the day from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. Mary Hicks serves as the Head of School. During her tenure, she has expanded the elementary program to include upper elementary grades. She also helped shepherd the school’s smooth and successful transition to independent, non-profit status. The school officially became The Portland Montessori School on January 1, 2013. Our guides, head of school and most staff members are certified by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) to ensure we guide our students using internationally recognized standards of educational excellence.
