About This Cause

Youth Music Project is the only nonprofit music school in Clackamas County. We offer free tuition to all students on the free or reduced lunch program in school. Youth Music Project targets four big-picture goals in its programs: 1) Youth have a lifelong appreciation of and engagement with music. • Youth’s experiences are shaped through positive mentorship and exposure to a variety of music genres resulting in an appreciation for all music and the arts. 2) Youth engage in and develop a sense of belonging in community. • Youth feel accepted and valued and have regular opportunities to practice and strengthen collaboration and communication skills. 3) Youth cultivate growth mindset and perseverance. • Youth believe that ability is developed through practice and persistence and embrace obstacles and mistakes as part of the learning process. 4) Youth develop a greater confidence and a positive sense of identity. • Youth feel free to be their authentic selves and are given opportunities to progress and succeed. Youth Music Project is founded on the belief that music is essential for healthy child development, and that all children deserve access to quality musical experiences. The social, developmental and academic effects of music are well known and documented. Through the study and practice of music, students build capacity and capability for flexibility, problem solving, communication, the ability to learn new concepts, commitment, creativity and innovation, and the patience, perseverance, and practice necessary to strive toward excellence. The study of music also helps youth build self-confidence and self-esteem, develop social and technical skills, and identify and address challenges, all of which lead to improved academic and artistic performance. ALL children, regardless of their socio-economic standing, have the ability to learn and grow through music to become capable and confident adults.
