Mission Statement
"The School of Art" Mount Gretna School of Art will provide intensive art instruction to talented and motivated students in harmony with the community. “Four Pillars" artist residency A non-profit service of the Mount Gretna School of Art (MGSoA) Named after the “Four Pillars” of Chautauqua, this month long artist residency provides opportunities for artists to advance their work and connect with new audiences. While the residency is open to all working artists, a special purpose of the residency is to give Mount Gretna School of Art alumni a chance reconnect with Mount Gretna long after they are students.
About This Cause
Intensive Program Mount Gretna School of Art's Intensive Program is a top quality and highly focused residential program of art instruction limited to a select group of about 12 to 20 students each session. The current summer session lasts about 6 weeks with a primary course unified around the discipline of working from direct observation outside on-site from the landscape in and around Mount Gretna. Art and artist lectures, art museum and gallery trips, visiting critics, art exhibits, art workshops and instruction in figure drawing, and other artistic disciplines complement the landscape experience. The Intensive Program attracts working artists over the age of 18, including those pursuing degrees in art. The intensive program is also integrated into the community through a public lecture series, and workshops on art that integrate Intensive Program students alongside members of the general public in short art workshop sessions, and trips to art museums. • Teach art making with a focus on working from direct observation. • Teach painting with a focus on working outside in locations such as the natural setting of Mount Gretna’s neighborhoods and streets, forests and parks, lakes and streams, accessible regional land preserves, and other places in the surrounding area. • Attract a dedicated group of students for an intensive core program such as Undergraduate students pursuing art degrees, Non art majors with a vested interest in art, Graduate students pursuing art degrees, Adult artists who want to enhance their work by the same level of rigorous study. • Provide housing and food service to intensive program students in a camp like atmosphere. • Teach life drawing classes that focus on working from observation of sources such as the human figure. • Teach special topics workshops such as monotype and block printmaking, and other disciplines that complement the landscape painting focus. • Boost learning through museum trips to metropolitan areas such as NY, Washington DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia. • Provide an art lecture series in venues such as Mount Gretna’s Hall of Philosophy. • Provide art exhibits and/or open studio events in Mount Gretna and/or highly trafficked art venues such as Lancaster and Harrisburg. • Benefit the community while allowing students seeking intensive study the conditions necessary to focus on making top-level work. • Promote the arts through activities such as lectures, museum trips, exhibits, artist residencies, and all skill levels classes on art in addition to the intensive classes. • To provide scholarships to deserving students.
