Our mission is to empower students, equalize the classroom, and give hope for a brighter future by offering school supplies, educational tools, and incentive items necessary for successful learning.
About This Cause
At The Pencil Box, we envision a world where every child, regardless of their background, has the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond. Our mission is to ensure that students and teachers in underserved communities have access to essential school supplies, fostering academic achievement, personal growth, and a brighter future. We serve public schools in Tulsa County, focusing on those where 70% or more of students live at or below the Federal Poverty Level. By providing new and gently used school supplies, educational tools, and incentive items, we support teachers in creating equitable learning environments and help students overcome barriers to success. Our free store allows teachers to select grade-appropriate and subject-specific supplies tailored to their classroom needs. This approach ensures that resources directly benefit students, enhancing their engagement, confidence, and connection to the learning experience. In 2024 alone, we distributed over $1.1 million worth of supplies, impacting more than 25,000 students and 456 teachers across 57 schools. The need for our services is urgent. With over 65% of students in Tulsa County living in poverty and Oklahoma ranking among the lowest in education funding, systemic inequities continue to hinder student success. The number of eligible schools we serve has grown significantly, from 77 in 2024 to 89 in 2025, reflecting the increasing challenges faced by students and teachers in our community. This troubling trend underscores the importance of our work in addressing these disparities. Research shows that access to adequate school supplies is critical for improving academic performance, class participation, and self-esteem. By addressing these inequities, we aim to create a more equitable and supportive educational environment. The Pencil Box is powered by the dedication of our volunteers, who contribute thousands of hours each year to ensure our operations run smoothly. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of students and teachers, one pencil, notebook, and backpack at a time.
