Mission Statement
One Spark Academy is a non-profit learning center (dba, under One Spark Foundation Inc) for 6th-8th grade homeschool and independent study students.
About This Cause
Our learning academy, founded in 2011, provides core and enrichment courses for students who need something different than a traditional middle school. Our 6th-8th grade program offers most of what students would be able to take in a middle school, while several courses in math and science are provided for older learners. Students can attend full or part time, depending on their learning needs. Some are enrolled in homeschool charter schools and use us as a specified vendor. Our staff is comprised of talented, experienced educators who are invested in the idea of providing quality education services to students most in need of a safe, healthy, compassionate, dynamic learning environment, while using research-based current pedagogy. About 50% of our courses are in the STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). We are currently located at the Conejo YMCA, a 35-acre property that recently closed and now rents to us. We partner closely with the City of Thousand Oaks, the Conejo Recreation and Park District, the Thousand Oaks Library, and other supportive organizations in the community that have provided grants to further our cause and commitment to healthy, sustainable living/gardening/environmental care (Whole Foods, Jamba Juice). We also partner closely with the California Health and Longevity Institute for our cooking classes, and NatureBridge, another non-profit, with whom we take the students on field study trips.
