Mission Statement
Give a Beat’s mission is to reduce the harmful effects of incarceration through music production, DJing, and other education programs that transform individuals and inspire communities to take action.
About This Cause
Give a Beat’s programs directly address the interdependent cycle of mass incarceration through four programs that teach incarcerated and/or underserved youth, adults while incarcerated and support them when they return. We also engage the community in education and advocacy. Our programs aim to align with social justice leader Bryan Stevenson’s strategy for social change. We get “proximate” by working directly with students in our programs in their communities or in prisons, leverage our global network in the music industry to raise awareness to “shift the current narrative” around incarceration, “get uncomfortable” by confronting challenges and will always “hold the hope” that a world transformed through the power of music can exist. -Landmark Prison Electronic Music Program -On a New Track Reentry Mentoring Program -DJ & Music Production Programs for Youth -"I Give a Beat" Education & Action Program The Prison Electronic Music Program’s mission is to directly affect currently incarcerated people by teaching technical, business and life skills that can be applied while incarcerated and post-release. The aim of the Youth Music Production and DJ program is to reach youth from underserved communities, and in high-stressed environments to provide a positive creative emotional outlet through music production and Djing. Our unique Reentry Mentoring Program is a group mentoring model to help returning citizens as they navigate barriers and open up career and entrepreneurial opportunities that will dramatically reduce their chances of recidivism. The “I Give a Beat” Program educates and activates the electronic music industry community around the devastating impact of mass incarceration. Influential artists share information through campaigns and speak on panels, volunteers staff booths at music festivals, and grass-roots DJ-driven music communities host fundraising events in person and online.
