Mission Statement

Colectiva’s mission is to build the collective power of immigrant, working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through advocacy, education and legal services. We believe that justice should not be determined by wealth, citizenship, language or age, and offer low and pro-bono legal services, while working to empower Latino immigrant communities through community education, and stopping unjust detention and deportation practices.

About This Cause

Colectiva provides direct legal services, and community education to build power and organize around the state since 2012. Currently Colectiva has over 1,200 open cases. Since the election, Colectiva’s rapid response has provided needed resources to scared communities. In partnerships with schools, places of worship, and community centers, we have developed a clinic model that build upon our know your rights workshops. Clinics also include working with families to create safe action plans, and providing free direct services like immigration consults and access to mental health professionals. We have been able to serve hundreds of individuals and families with this clinic model. Our small staff of 5 conducted 34 workshops and clinics throughout Washington in 2016, 16 occurring between the election and the end of the year. Colectiva serves immigrant communities most directly impacted by detention, deportation and the inhumane immigration system, including people in detention, and families on the outside. Our communities are usually comprised of people from poor socio economic backgrounds, with little resources. Most women are single parents, or have become single parents due to the system, where families are often separated and re-traumatized. Our collective power is built by investing in community members, and working with them to increase our impact. Legal clinics, community presentations and workshops allow us to interact and educate our undocumented and immigrant communities about important information, like their rights while detained by local and federal law enforcement, or deportation defense, like how to get a loved one our of detention. Our goal is for people to be empowered to take action, and feel supported as they work for reunification, justice and healing. As undocumented immigrants we have been told to be silent about our status, to fear the police and ICE, and to let our allies do the work for us because it is too risky to fight for our community ourselves. It is our belief that by educating ourselves, building power, and speaking up, we have the ability to create systemic change.
