Mission Statement
Working in partnership with school systems and artistic communities, Hartford Performs infuses and integrates arts and cultural experiences into teaching and learning in ways that enrich the student experience and improve outcomes across the curriculum. Our vision is that the arts are integral to student success in Hartford Public Schools.
About This Cause
Hartford Performs brings professional teaching artists into Hartford Public Schools to help students find new ways into subjects like math, English, science and social studies. We also take Hartford kids out to area arts organizations to ensure they expand their world and connect with new parts of their community by experiencing professional dance, music, theater and museums. And we provide Hartford teachers with professional-learning programs that help them use art techniques in their classrooms to help kids better engage with subject matter -- and with each other. More than 10,000 students in all 31 PreK-Grade 8 public schools in our city benefit from our system each year. Hartford Performs is founded on the notion that when children are actively and joyfully engaged in their learning, they grasp lessons more personally, more deeply, and more lastingly. Study after study bears out the fact that the arts help children advance both academically and socially/emotionally. Want a few examples? Kids in our programs learn how planets and molecules move by dancing like them. They understand mathematical patterns by drumming them. They explore a historical event by acting it out from different perspectives. While students might describe these experiences as "fun," their teachers know that every one of Hartford Performs' 300+ program offerings are built on learning objectives directly tied to school curriculum and are closely aligned to both Common Core State Standards and National Core Arts Standards. Quite simply, Hartford Performs helps students find alternate paths into complex or abstract ideas -- and enjoy their learning in the process. Our results are remarkable. Each year, hundreds of teachers provide candid feedback on whether and how our programs benefit their students. During the 2022-23 school year, 65% of these teachers said that the Hartford Performs program in their classroom affected attendance, with 23% reporting a "major" impact on kids showing up and on time. An overwhelming majority of responding teachers also agreed or strongly agreed that the Hartford Performs program they selected for their classroom helped their students in all of the areas the program was designed to address: * Helped students develop vocabulary: 91% * Helped students express themselves verbally: 93% * Helped students express themselves in writing: 76% * Helped students develop active-listening skills: 97% * Helped students develop critical-evaluation skills: 91% * Helped students develop problem-solving skills: 89% * Helped students to think creatively: 96% * Helped students enhance social skills: 95% * Helped students work collaboratively with other students: 93% * Helped students try new things: 98% * Helped students retain information: 92% * Helped students focus: 96% * Helped students with self-management: 94% * Contributed to students' happiness and enjoyment of school time: 99%. With your help, Hartford Performs ensures that each Hartford PreK-Grade 8 student receives at least two of these enriching, mind-nourishing, child-affirming experiences every year. In a cash-strapped urban school district like ours, this would not be possible without the support of foundations, corporations and individuals like you who want to be sure that each Hartford student has rich academic opportunities to learn and succeed. Hartford Performs is an independent 501(c)(3) organization created as a public/private partnership. While our work is supported in part by the Hartford Public School system, the majority of our funding is from private organizations and people who care about Hartford students.
