YOUTH ULTIMATE LEAGUE OF ARLINGTON

ARLINGTON, Virginia, 22207 United States

Mission Statement

YULA sponsors and organizes high school age Ultimate programs in the Fall and Spring that are in addition to, and separate from, the Arlington Public Schools (APS) Fall Ultimate sports program operated in the county high schools. In the fall, the YULA high school teams will have practices during the weeks on days that do not conflict with APS practices or games. There may be one or more fall tournaments where teams will attend either coed or single-sex. Over the winter, YULA high school age teams have informal after-school winter conditioning. Many players also sign up to play in YULA's and/or WAFC's Indoor Youth Ultimate league. Spring is the more competitive season, and players form single-sex teams that may also be divided by ability ("A" and "B"). Practices begin when weather allows, which is usually mid- to late-February. Teams go to weekend tournaments across the mid-Atlantic region, including the Virginia state championship (“States”), as well as hosting the YULA Invite tournament here in Arlington in late March. YULA Middle School Ultimate in Arlington offers a co-ed Middle School age Ultimate league in the spring and fall. The YULA program is in addition to, and separate from, to Arlington Public School's Middle School Ultimate sports program in the fall. In the fall and spring YULA sponsors a series of school-aligned games, practices and events.

About This Cause

Ultimate is a field sport that uniquely incorporates athleticism, skill, and sportsmanship. Although Ultimate resembles many traditional sports in its athletic requirements, it is unlike most sports due to its focus on self-officiating, even at the highest levels of competition. This concept, called Spirit of the Game, is integrated into the basic philosophy of the sport, written into the rules, and practiced at all levels of the game from local leagues to the World Games. Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of Ultimate is played by two teams with a flying disc or Frisbee™ on a field with end zones, similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game™, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees.
