Mission Statement
La Cocina VA DBA Kitchen of Purpose's mission is to use the power of food as an agent of social and economic change generating workforce and economic development in the DC area. Kitchen of Purpose’s strategic goals are: To train, certify and to place unemployed low-income immigrants in meaningful jobs in the food service industry; to improve their English skills, and to build a stronger community that supports this population to become self-sufficient and financial independent. With a workforce and entrepreneurship program, we empower low-income individuals to obtain jobs and to start small businesses, while at the same provide healthier meals to underserved populations. Through a 12-week bilingual culinary-arts job training, vocational English instruction, job-readiness, paid-internship, job-placement, wraparound services and industry standard food-safety certifications from the National Restaurant Association, Kitchen of Purpose serves a platform to create careers and economic opportunity.
About This Cause
Formerly La Cocina VA, Kitchen of Purpose offers different programs designed to empower low-income residents of the DC metro area. Programs include job training (Culinary Training Program, Baking Training Program, Front of House, Restaurant Management 101), small business incubator with shared commercial kitchen space, and food assistance. Training programs are provided free of cost to clients. Since 2014, our programs have supported 200+ vulnerable women and men, and at-risk youth from marginalized communities. Our organization has proudly placed 90% of culinary trainees in employment at hotels, catering companies, hospitals, and local schools. Additionally, we have supported 45 business owners to develop their business plans and advance their entrepreneurial skills. Thirteen small food businesses are formally operating out of the shared kitchen incubator space. The Food Assistance Program has prepared and delivered 40K+ meals to children and adults in Northern Virginia.
