Mission Statement
DCFNE’s mission is to lessen the impact of violence in the District by offering forensic nursing care to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
About This Cause
DCFNE meets the immediate needs of crime victims and support them at an early stage in their recovery process by guaranteeing them free trauma-informed forensic nursing services within a functioning system of care that is independent from the formal government healthcare, law enforcement, and legal system that so many victims seek to avoid. DCFNE is the sole provider of forensic nursing care in the District of Columbia and responds to every victim who requests our services. In addition to ensuring victims begin the path to recovery on the right foot, forensic nursing care is vital for documenting injuries and behaviors that form the basis for law enforcement or legal recourse. DCFNE accomplishes its mission by: 1) performing medical forensic examinations (injury identification, evaluation, and documentation); 2) collecting physical evidence for use in criminal investigations and civil proceedings, including the “rape kit”; and 3) promoting knowledge, awareness, and understanding among medical providers and the community about forensic nursing and how to access DCFNE’s services.
