About This Cause
Roots for the Home Team (RFTHT) operates on the radical idea that every young person deserves opportunities to see and create the future they want. Through nourishing salads, challenging studies, and real-life work, teens find the tools to launch, with confidence, into the next levels of life. We accomplish this by partnering with urban youth garden programs. Youth grow food in their programs. Through RFTHT, they collaborate (in teams) with celebrated chefs to create salad concepts based on the produce they grow. The youth prepare and share their salads in two ways. 1) To feed and nourish those with food insecurity or medical needs and 2) As a food kiosk at Minnesota Twins baseball games. The youth also participate in a university level workshops created in collaboration with U of MN researchers in the School of Social Work and the youth themselves. Through the curriculum the youth gain a greater understanding of self, including their leadership style. They’re introduced to the characteristics and value of an entrepreneurial mindset. They discover personal strengths, grow courage and learn how to leverage new relationships and opportunities offered to take control of the future they want. Multiple partnerships with businesses and individuals introduces youth to mentors who provide insight and pathways into post HS opportunities.
