Mission Statement
The 7/20 Memorial Foundation envisions a world where all people are thriving and empowered in their healing path and where the need for mental health support in perpetuity is recognized, more readily available, and helps prevent other tragedies. Therefore, we have created and will maintain a nationwide network for reaction resources and tragedy prevention. We recognize and advocate for the many layers of mass tragedy resource needs, from triage to recovery to healing, for long-term resiliency. We encourage and support the need for all people to receive love and support prior to inflicting tragedy on others.
About This Cause
The 7-20 Memorial Foundation is 501c3 organization made up of family, survivors, and community members affected by the Century 16 theater shooting of July 20, 2012. In 2018, we achieved our core purpose - to pay tribute to our 13 cherished individuals who were taken from us and to commemorate the enduring strength of our community. Through collaborative efforts, generous contributions, and events like our annual "Day of resilience" that includes the Heros Journey 5K and the Reflection Garden on Tap Beer and chalk art festival, we successfully raised the necessary funds to build the memorial. Today, the 7/20 Memorial "Ascentiate" proudly stands within the water-wise garden at the Aurora Municipal Center, serving as a sanctuary of healing and hope for all those who have undergone traumatic experiences. Beyond our efforts to build community and support other communities who have experienced similar tragedy through our paper crane peace project, we have grown into an organization of advice and guidance for other communities, as well as advocating for long term needs of survivors. We are a founding organization of the "Survivors of Tragedy Outreach Program" (S.T.O.P) whose members represent the lived experiences of more than 20 communities across the U.S. and internationally who have experienced direct trauma and loss due to terrorism and targeted mass violence. A coalition offering survivor-to-survivor peer support and outreach from individuals directly impacted by and responding to terrorism, mass violence and military conflict that have come together for prevention and peer support to promote long-term recovery and resilience to triage and address the multi-layered impacts of targeted violence and preventable mass-scale tragedies.
