Mission Statement

Learning Equality's mission is to enable every person in the world to exercise their right to a quality education by supporting the creation and distribution of open educational resources, facilitating their use across diverse low-resource learning environments worldwide. Our vision is to create an equitable world where all learners develop their agency, create positive transformation, and flourish.

About This Cause

Learning Equality strives for a world where everyone, everywhere has access to a quality education. We believe education unlocks a kinder, more just society, and that's why we focus on providing equitable learning opportunities in low-resource environments with limited Internet connectivity. 1 in 3 children around the world are either out of school, or in school but not achieving basic numeracy and literacy. At the same time, a staggering 33% of the world, or 2.6 billion people, lack Internet access. This digital divide leaves countless children and youth without access to the growing wealth of online educational resources and edtech tools that could be helping them learn. Kolibri is Learning Equality's holistic suite of open-source tools designed specifically for teaching and learning with tech but without the Internet. This adaptable, offline-first platform empowers educators in low-resource settings to deliver rich educational experiences. Kolibri includes an online curricular tool to help with selection of relevant materials, organization according to learning needs and alignment to curricular standards, a library of open educational resources including books, videos, HTML5 simulations, and more, a toolkit of guidance materials to support training and implementation, and a data aggregation portal to help program admins assess learning and make data informed decisions. In over 11 years, Learning Equality has reached over 10 million learners across more than 220 countries and territories. Our impact spans the globe, from Jordan and Honduras to India and Uganda. From refugee camps and rural schools to correctional facilities and out-of-school programs, Learning Equality is bridging educational gaps in some of the world's most challenging environments. Learning Equality has developed a playful, collaborative approach to project-based learning through Kolibri's features, which has boosted academic, critical thinking, and social-emotional skills in under-resourced communities. In 2023, we co-piloted a tech-based learning program for 714 out-of-school refugee learners with partners in Uganda. Within 12 weeks, attending two sessions weekly, the students' skills soared: the percentage of students who could read a word increased from 20% to 100%, re-enrollment in formal schooling reached approximately 100%, literacy rates rose from 13% to 71%, numeracy rates improved from 44% to 87%, and social-emotional skills grew from 41% to 71%. Due to the program's tremendous success, Learning Equality will be scaling and expanding it to new contexts and partners. We recognize the transformative potential of AI in education. Over the past five years, Learning Equality has developed AI-powered tools to simplify and improve curriculum alignment. Utilizing educational technology often involves choosing between creating new teaching materials or utilizing existing open educational resources. However, these open resources, though valuable, are often scattered across the Internet and challenging to adapt to various curricula. Aligning them with specific educational standards is typically a laborious and costly process. Our AI tools address this challenge by organizing, adapting, and contextualizing these resources to match national curricula or textbooks. This alignment is essential for making resources discoverable and practical for effective learning. By streamlining this process, these AI tools significantly reduce the time and cost involved. What used to take months and hundreds of thousands of dollars can now be achieved in days, with just a few hundred dollars in API credits and a few thousand dollars for expert review.
