About This Cause

History: The 4th Dimension Recovery Center, 4D, is a non-profit started in 2012 by young people in recovery who were tired of fellowshipping outside 12-Step meetings. “There just wasn’t anywhere to go and chill that was conducive to being sober,” reported co-founder Whitney Fabrizio when asked how 4D came to be. 4D’s humble beginning started in Stan Herman’s warehouse, which, at one time, was the 24/10 rave club. A person who frequents 4D reported in a community survey that they came to 4D looking for a rave and found a sober party instead and then decided to get sober. This quote from Bill Wilson in the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book is where 4D’s name, 4th Dimension, was inspired. In this quote, Bill Wilson describes the unparalleled power of two people suffering from alcoholism helping each other to recover from it. Along with Bill, 4D believes in “peer-power”: one young person in recovery helping another young person find recovery. The first two years of 4D’s development were a constant “struggle to keep the doors open,” according to Founder Winston Murray. As 4D’s first president, Winston and his team paid the rent by subletting to 12-step meetings, hosting dances and organizing simple fundraisers. As the club gained popularity throughout the recovery community, the aspirations also caught the attention of several recovery “ol-timers” who extended professional support. Two key ol-timers, addiction treatment expert Eric Martin and Attorney James O’Rourke still volunteer as advisory board members to this day. Services/Activities Recovery Community Center: 4D operates a youth addiction drop-in recovery center for individuals 35 and under seeking addiction recovery support. The recovery center hosts 12-step meetings and recovery events 7 days a week & 365 days a year. 4D promotes “Event-Based Recovery” which includes, but is not limited to DJ dances, comedy nights, movie nights, Blazer nights, football games, foosball, pool, video games, pajama parties, poetry readings, game nights, etc. 4D’s current location in Multnomah County serves about 600 unique individuals per month and provides peer support services to 50-60 individuals per month. Recovery Mentor (Peer) Services: 4D mentors are state-certified and identify in recovery themselves. They use their personal experience in recovery and various peer-service techniques to support people in finding and sustaining abstinence from drugs and alcohol. This includes finding employment, going to college, developing recovery skills like emotional regulation and relapse prevention, finding new positive social groups, engaging in primary care, completing behavioral health treatment and probation/parole, developing parental skills and more. Please check 4D's website for updated peer-service outcome data. Recovery Housing 4D provides recovery-supportive housing to program participants. Occupants live within an abstinent-based environment and a positive peer culture while a recovery housing mentor provides additional recovery support and independent life-skills training. Occupants are required to maintain abstinence and work on their individual recovery while living at the residence.
