Mission Statement
CSJ provides lawyers and social workers to survivors of sexual violence during criminal proceedings. We use our experiences on the ground--at police stations, hospitals, child protection and in the courts--to advocate for effective and compassionate justice systems.
About This Cause
Counsel to Secure Justice (CSJ) provides legal and psychosocial support during criminal proceedings to rape victims in Delhi, India. CSJ helps clients secure justice, assisting public prosecutors during trial to obtain convictions. CSJ social workers also connect clients with support services needed to restore their lives, like counselling, medical care, protective shelter, financial assistance and education needs. What means most to our clients though is we stand with them during times of greatest darkness and confusion in their lives, when many times even their family doesn’t support them. Consider Neha’s story. Neha was a teenage girl who was raped multiple times by her father. CSJ was her main source of support during criminal proceedings. In fact, her family was hostile towards her and wanted her to retract her story. On the day of Neha’s testimony, she boldly told the judge what her father had done. When Neha walked out of court, her mother cursed her. ‘My daughter is dead,’ her mother said, as she threw ashes of a dead person at her. CSJ empowered Neha, gave her a voice and guided her down a path towards healing. The judge found Neha’s father guilty of rape and sentenced him to life imprisonment. While Neha is still separated from her family, she is staying at a home for young women and studying to become a nurse. Since starting operations in April 2013, CSJ lawyers and social workers have represented more than 160 children, like Neha, who have suffered sexual abuse.
