About This Cause

About: Founded in 2012, SIMA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to igniting social change through the transformative power of documentary storytelling. Situated at the vibrant intersection of film and justice, we champion bold documentaries, bring them into classrooms and communities worldwide, and fuel their impact with crucial funding support, innovative education, and unparalleled global reach. Often recognized as "the gold standard of social impact filmmaking," SIMA uniquely harnesses the power of film to inspire and catalyze social change. We're the only nonprofit that offers this rare combination of interconnected programs: SIMA AWARDS Through our annual Social Impact Media Awards, we discover and elevate visionary filmmakers whose compelling stories expose injustice and vividly imagine new possibilities. Each year, films are selected from over 140 countries around the world, competing for awards, cash prizes and entry into SIMA’s distribution channels. Our awards alumni comprises 4,200 filmmakers from 147 countries, with 605 films honored and/or in active distribution. SIMA CINEMA ACROSS BORDERS Through our international community screening series, Cinema Across Borders, we deliver critical documentaries directly to grassroots organizers and communities across the Global South, bridging divides and enabling cross-cultural exchange of ideas and solutions. Our fellowship comprises 59 community ambassadors who have facilitated over 600 community screenings serving over 200,000 attendees in 57 countries. SIMA ACADEMY Through our flagship online education program and award-winning edtech platform, SIMA Academy, we equip the next generation with essential media literacy, empathy, and the vital tools to tell stories that matter. Coined as “the Netflix for changemakers,” SIMA Academy serves over 147,000 students and 5,300 educators in 106 countries. SIMA FISCAL SPONSORSHIP Through our Fiscal Sponsorship Program, we empower bold, independent storytelling by helping filmmakers, artists, and creators access crucial grant funding and effectively manage it. Our Fiscal Sponsorship Program serves over 106 active participants who have raised over $5,000,000. OUR STORY In 2012, award-winning documentary filmmaker and human rights activist, Daniela Kon Lieberberg, founded SIMA to support and champion excellence in social impact filmmaking by launching an annual awards program and global distribution platforms that amplify the power of media to foster a world that is free from prejudice, discrimination and oppression. SIMA started as the first and only international media competition honoring achievements in the creative, human rights and humanitarian fields. Today, SIMA is the most renowned global curator in the social impact space, serving independent film, academic and global social justice industries around the world. HOW YOUR DONATION HELPS Your support empowers us to bring impactful documentaries to underserved communities, provide vital educational resources to students worldwide, and champion the next generation of community leaders and social impact filmmakers.
