Mission Statement

Austin Region Justice for Our Neighbors, a non-profit law office, welcomes refugees and immigrants into our communities by providing free, high-quality immigration legal services, education, and advocacy.

About This Cause

VALUES We believe in justice for all. Justice shouldn't rely on who can pay for it. We offer our legal services for free to clients whose household income is at or below 200% of the poverty level. We believe in respecting the human dignity of all people. This should be a priority from policy to the daily practice of law, education, and advocacy. We believe in generational change for our whole community through the work of immigration justice. HISTORY Established in May of 2013, Austin Region Justice for Our Neighbors celebrates over a decade of defending human rights in Central Texas. We have always focused on humanitarian cases and narrowed our new client intake to specifically removal defense in 2017 to fill gaps in service for those who are most at-risk for deportation. As part of the Immigration Law and Justice Network (formerly National Justice for Our Neighbors), founded in 1999 by the United Methodist Committee on Relief, we're proud to be part of a movement to assist immigrants all over the United States in navigating this country’s complex and ever-changing system of immigration regulations. Austin JFON is grateful for the continued support of many United Methodist individuals, congregations, and parachurch entities, including assistance with affordable office space in the city of Austin. To be clear, we are a separate 501(c)3 status public charity with no religious affiliation and strive to make our space and services safe and welcoming for neighbors of any and no religious affiliation. WHO DO WE REPRESENT? We represent refugees and immigrants who are already in removal proceedings. “Removal” is the legal term for what most people call “deportation.” This means the government is actively seeking to remove this person from the country. Most of the families who come to us are seeking asylum. Because asylum has a 43% success rate in the San Antonio court we check if children or teenagers may qualify for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJ). Children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by one or both parents qualify for SIJ. This path requires going to state court before applying through U.S. Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS). However, we have a near-100% success rate for protection through SIJ and can secure it much faster than the backlog of asylum cases. For adults, our primary areas through which clients qualify for our services are: Persons seeking asylum, who are afraid of returning to their home countries for fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group, or torture by the government, or with the consent of the government, of the home country. AND Persons in removal proceedings who have lived in the U.S. for over ten years continuously, who have not committed certain crimes, and whose removal would cause exceptional and extreme hardship to their U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident spouse, child, or parent.
