Mission Statement

Improve Your Tomorrow’s (IYT’s) mission is to increase the number of young men of color (African-American, Latinx, Asian, and two or more races) to attend and graduate from colleges and universities. Created in 2013, IYT is a community-based organization committed to breaking the school-to-prison pipeline for young men of color by assisting them get to and through college. The organization's vision is a nation in which men of color are over-represented in higher education, under-represented in criminal justice system and leaders in their community. IYT currently serves more than 650 students across Sacramento county in grades 7th through 12th grade and college students, some of which attend schools across California.

About This Cause

The IYT College Academy is a program of IYT that serves students at traditional high schools and middle schools. The program currently serves 600 students at eight high schools and middle schools in Sacramento including Valley High School, Burbank High School, Natomas High School, Del Campo High School, Samuel Jackman Middle School, Will Rogers Middle School and Natomas Gateway Middle School. The primary outcomes include: - Increase students GPA - Increase attendance rates - Increase A-G completion rates - Increase four-year university attendance rates - Increase college graduation rates. IYT College Academy scholars are provided with the following support services: - Academic Support: Weekly group study halls, small group/ one to one tutoring, monthly institutes where facilitators present on a variety of topics that are aimed towards ranging from entrepreneurship to cultural awareness. - College Preparation Initiative: Advising on college planning and preparation, personal statement coaching on college application essays. - College/University visits: College Success initiative, grants/emergency loans to IYT college students, monthly mentorship check-ins with IYT mentor, quarterly video call with IYT college students and their graduating class. - Workforce Development: Annual career oriented visits to various corporations/government entities, 8-week paid summer Capitol Internship Program, IYT College Hire Program (We hire IYT college students to work as mentors/tutors to IYT high/middle school students), 3-4 Volunteer opportunities per year Cognitive Skills Development: “I am Me” summer program that strengthens decision-making and coping capabilities among students who have experienced chronic stress or violence. Mentorship: 1:1 Mentorship. Each student is assigned an Academic Mentor who meets monthly with each designated student to review grades, attendance, college advising personal issues, etc. Results: - IYT is proven to dramatically improve the academic outcomes of young men of color. - 100% High School Graduation rate as compared to 65% of Black males and 75% of Latino males in California. - 94% College attendance rate, as compared to 45% of African Americans and 47% of Latinos in California. - 80% A-G completion rate, as compared to 26% of African American and Latino males in California. - 89% 4 year college acceptance rate into schools such as CSU Sacramento, San Diego State, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Monterey, CSU San Jose, CSU East Bay, CSU Dominquez Hills, CSU Chico, Humboldt State University, San Francisco State, Sonoma State, UC Merced, UC Davis, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, University of the Pacific, University of San Francisco, Azusa Pacific University, Dominican University, Johnson and Wells, Stillman University, Alcorn State, Virginia State and Florida Memorial
