Mission Statement
Elephant Family is on a mission to save the Asian elephant, a critically threatened species whose plight has not gotten the attention it desperately needs if it is to survive. Massive loss of habitat has caused Asian elephant numbers to plummet by 90% in the last 100 years. The crisis is complex, and the battle to save them must be fought on multiple fronts, and in collaboration with the communities and cultures where elephants have existed for millennia. Our conservation partnerships are both forward-thinking and respectful of regional cultures and knowledge.
About This Cause
Elephant Family’s mission is to save the Asian elephant—90% have been wiped out in the last 100 years. EF partners with a network of first-class conservation organizations to protect and connect wild elephant passageways and safeguard communities in India; fund investigations into the illegal smuggling of elephant calves into Thailand for the tourism industry; anti-poaching patrols; elephant surveys, and more. We’ve funded more than 150 field projects and are currently working in six of the 13 range states: India, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia. Our partnerships empower local experts rather than imposing Western ideas on operations. Our impact stretches from the undulating tea terraces of the Western Ghats to the foothills of the Cardamon Mountains and to the dense rainforests of Northern Borneo. We fund the work and research of leading environmentalists and grassroots conservation organisations. Together we form a formidable defence against the destruction of the Asian elephant and in doing so help the tigers, orangutans, rhinos and other wildlife that share their habitat. Elephant Family is also one of the five NGOs that make up the Asian Elephant Alliance, which is changing the face of conservation in India. This milestone holds the key to securing safe passage for India’s elephants, which account for 50% of the world’s wild population. Together we aim to secure 100 corridors for over 25,000 elephants by 2025. A joint declaration of commitment was signed in the presence of Elephant Family’s Royal Presidents, their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, together with His Excellency, Mr. Ranjan Mathai, High Commissioner for India. Losing the Asian elephant would result in the collapse of Asia’s already fragile ecosystems. Asian elephants are often referred to as the "mega gardeners of the forest." They consume vast amounts of vegetation which ensures that certain plant species don’t become too dominant in any one environment. The pathways created by elephant migration in Asia play an important environmental role in opening up forests for other animals to move through. Protecting these ‘elephant corridors’ is not only essential for the conservation of Asian elephants, but also for their habitat and all creatures that share it. “Conserving elephants [is] about protecting one of the forces that shapes ecosystems and helps sustain the wealth of wildlife found across much of the continent. It is about saving the creative power of nature.” —Douglas Chadwick, "The Fate of the Elephant" The demise of the Asian elephant, and the effort to fight back, is one of the greatest wildlife stories of our time, and it is unfolding right now. Elephant Family is part of that story.
