Mission Statement
The Wanda Alston Foundation's (WAF) mission and vision is to eradicate homelessness for LGBTQ youth and young adults in Washington, DC. Since 2008, Wanda Alston Foundation has worked to improve the lives of homeless LGBTQ youth by providing up to 18 months of shelter, case management, life skills training, connections to medical, mental health and behavioral health care and support with finding or keeping employment. The facility has 24-hour on-site staff. All of the youth have experienced high levels of discrimination and loss of connections to family and friends. The WAF youth have been rejected and have survived unspeakable violence and abuse. Their trauma creates substantial obstacles to achieving stable mental health, housing and employment. The Wanda Alston Foundation responds to the acute needs of each resident. The aim is to provide safety, support and consistency to allow the residents to work toward completing educational goals, maintain stable employment and decrease the risk of chronic homelessness.
About This Cause
Funding is paramount to the success of the Wanda Alston Foundation programming. Your financial support will allow the Wanda Alston Foundation to increase the hours of our onsite clinical supervisor. The Clinical Supervisor and case manager complete full assessments of each resident, develop individual service plans and make immediate and appropriate referrals to medical care and to mental and behavioral health services. The Wanda Alston Foundation has weekly and monthly support groups including topics such as "Know Your Rights" and "Healthy Relationships". The impact of homelessness, trauma, mental health challenges, rejection and discrimination among other things such as stigma, poverty, institutionalized homophobia, racism, the lack of education or job opportunities requires a strong and steady program. The Wanda Alston Foundation provides life skills coaching, resume writing, interview prep, educational and work support including tuition and fee assistance and transportation support. The Wanda Alston Foundation provides 18 months of shelter including three meals per day. The Wanda Alston Foundation has 24 hour on-site staff that provides support and guidance. WAF provides clothing including work clothing and personal hygiene and toiletries. The Wanda Alston Foundation provides computer labs and access to internet services. The Wanda Alston Foundation collaborates with other LGBTQ and ally organizations and agencies to provide a holistic and trauma informed care approach to meeting the needs of each resident.
