Mission Statement
The Washington State Charter Schools Association's mission is to advocate for and support a thriving, innovative charter public school sector that upholds quality via student-centered, community-rooted schools and aspires to disrupt a systemically racist and inequitable education system.
About This Cause
Founded in 2014, the Washington State Charter Schools Association (WA Charters) is a statewide organization that advocates for and supports a thriving, innovative charter public school sector of student-centered, community-rooted schools. Our vision is that Washington state will one day be home to an anti-racist, student-centered public education system that is accessible to all students. We will help achieve this vision by supporting a growing sector of charter public schools that sets the standard for community-led, accessible, and anti-racist education. WA Charters works across Washington state to support a strong system of charter public schools. Charter public schools are a type of public school that are non-profit, publicly funded, staffed by certified teachers, and held accountable to state and national standards. There are currently 18 charter public schools operating in Washington, serving approximately 4,700 students as of the 2021-2022 school year and projected to serve 8,700 students when all schools are serving all grades. (Schools start out serving a smaller number of grades and growing grades each year. Many charters in Washington are 1-2 years into operations.) The majority of our students are Global Majority (Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, and People of Color) (59%) students and students from low-income backgrounds (52%). Our schools also serve more English Learners than the state average and employ more than three times the state average of Global Majority teachers (40%)*. As of October 2020, our True Measure Collaborative special education program served approximately 500 students with disabilities, who were 51% Global Majority students. Charters in Washington are focused on closing educational opportunity gaps and have served systemically underserved students since the first school’s launch. Schools are located in urban and rural regions of our state, including Seattle, Tukwila, Tacoma, Spokane, the Kitsap Peninsula, Bellingham, Vancouver, and Federal Way. The Washington State Board of Education (2019) found that “The charter school students made on average more than one year of academic growth in ELA and math, while the non-charter schools (TPS) students made approximately one year of academic growth in ELA and math" in 2018-19. *student and teacher demographic data as of SY 2020-21
