About This Cause
Newark Science and Sustainability, Inc. is a community-driven, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Newark, New Jersey that was established in July 2013. Newark SaS implements various initiatives to increase awareness of environmental issues through educational programs and hands-on training, such as community gardens and urban farms. We advocate for the incorporation of science and sustainable living practices into the fabric of our social life, ensuring that residents achieve a high standard of living, while protecting the environment. Our goal is to demonstrate how humans, nature, and technology can coexist harmoniously. We strive to assist with the creation of self-sustaining communities by developing pathways for green jobs that contribute to self-sufficiency and community empowerment. Newark SaS Pillars Our pillars provide an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Through this process, we believe individuals will become more informed about their environment, and therefore, more likely to have a holistic understanding of themselves and the world they inhabit. The following are the five Newark SaS Pillars: *Urban Agriculture: Participants learn the art of plant cultivation and management by turning vacant lots into community gardens/urban farms, making healthy food more accessible to residents. *Clean Energy: Participants are exposed to methods of clean energy, such as pedal bike generators, solar & wind technology, and battery packs. *Ecological Building: Participants become more informed about green construction, passive solar construction, and other sustainable approaches to building. *Wellness & Nutrition Education: Participants become equipped with the necessary tools to make healthier food choices and prepare nutritional meals. *Eco-Art: Participants are exposed to the use of natural and recycled material to create, enhance, and interact with their environment, using eco-art as a means for self-expression, beautification, and personal engagement.
