Mission Statement

Reducing Animal Suffering Globally

About This Cause

Our approach to reducing animal suffering globally centers around creating long-term sustainable veterinary care in underserved countries by improving the level of education and training of local veterinarians, animal workers and community health. SVI’s mission coincides with the concept of One Health, which maintains that human health, animal health and ecosystem health are inextricably linked and must be considered as parts of a whole. Veterinarians are among the only professionals that routinely work at the interface between these three fields. SVI provides education, training, research, infrastructure and business development opportunities to local veterinarians, animal health care workers (eg, farriers), and farmers in underserved countries. This is done by helping set up veterinary hospitals in underserved areas, providing modern equipment and supplies, and most importantly regular and on-going mentorship to selected local veterinarians. A well trained, competent local veterinarian in turn develops trusting relationship within the community and enhances the value of animal health and welfare to the local community. This synergistic relationship in turn provides long lasting and improved animal health and community economics. We also train and educate via in-country hands on courses in the our established clinics and in the field. These courses have the added benefit of providing much needed veterinary services to animals in these remote communities. In addition to our focus on veterinary medicine, a second arm of SVI is developing permaculture farming in the local communities for increased nutrition and food security. Promoting sustainable land use not only benefits community and animal health but also provides more financial/farming independence for the local small farmer. In addition to staple foods such as rice, beans, and corn, special attention is given to selecting other plants that offer multiple benefits such as nitrogen fixation, erosion control, shade, or animal fodder. The income from the food produced stays locally in the community which in turn allows the families and thus the community to develop financially while providing secure food sources. The third arm of SVI is adult vocational training. Many impoverished families in rural areas are landless with significant food insecurity and have vulnerable or non-existant livelihoods. The lack of income and food for the family is reflected in the poor health of their work animals. Teaching young adults vocational skills within a community increases potential to alternative incomes while adding much needed local services which have economic as well as community value. Needed trades include welding, carpentry, masonry, electrician, mechanics, farriers, saddlemakers, bee keepers, chefs/cooks, and more. We are working toward building a school for various workshops for tradesmen. SVI selects certain committed and community minded individuals within our networked areas for vocational training which benefits the family as well as community. By elevating resources for the families, resources are available to elevate the health of the work and community animals. Currently, SVI has an established network of rural communities in Nicaragua, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Our volunteer staff have provided veterinary services and training for the past 13 years. Small animal veterinary college courses are established in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
