Mission Statement

Letter of Marque Theater Company (LoM) spreads ensemble culture through inclusive, responsive, and accessible theater, classes, and events.

About This Cause

Letter of Marque produces readings, cabarets, workshops, full productions, tours, and community engagement events centered around socio-political themes such as: the judicial system (The Pyrate Trials), bullying (Bully Me Down), race (The Problem), relationships (Gifts), rape culture (The Double Falsehood Project), and war profiteering (Don’t Feed the Cats), coming of age (Pinocchio), and artistic legacy (The Isle is Full of Noises). While we have been a staple in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn since 2013, this season will see our work continued in a digital theater space. We envision a future in which success is pursued collectively and ensemble ideology is a vital part of healthy communities. Letter of Marque is an artistic home and safe space for our ensemble of 40 actors, musicians, movers, designers, dramaturgs, playwrights, and directors. LoM is a creative laboratory and workshop for two anonymously selected playwrights to be in residence with our multidisciplinary ensemble. It is a safe space for our 150+ non-performer improv students to continue to learn and feel connected while in isolation. Letter of Marque’s goals include: fighting apathy by presenting theater that challenges the status quo through ingenuity of design, process, and perspective; removing financial divides by offering all of our events, shows, and classes at little or no cost to attendees; paying our artists to create their art; training and exploring ensemble and community; actively diversifying our company, especially in terms of skin color, ethnicity, national origin, gender expression and lack thereof, as well as diversities of artistic discipline and experience; and, developing a fiscally sustainable model for other small theater companies to replicate.
