Mission Statement

Our mission is to introduce the marvels of STEM to at-risk, underserved children on a systematic, frequent and regularly scheduled basis, enabling them to experience, explore and personalize the resulting discoveries. One of our primary goals is to address the challenges experienced by the 9000 children attending public schools in Mount Vernon, 97% are of color. In addition, we will be a resource to all children throughout the northeast.

Our Mission-Introduce the marvels of technology and science (STEM) to underserved children through a cutting-edge informal educational center. Our Vision-This state-of-the-art STEM educational facility will directly help the 9,000 public school children of Mount Vernon and other children within the region attend four-year colleges and pursue lucrative careers. Click here learn more Science centers embedded in the community, embraced by the school system and freely available to children, parents and teachers alike have proven to be successful interveners needed in the metropolitan areas around the country. We seek to duplicate and expand the success of those centers in Mount Vernon. From an ROI perspective, we are going to build the capacity to change the lives of many young people. All 9,000 Mount Vernon public school children will visit the 30,000-square-foot center at least twice a year for a guided tour. All will have the opportunity to participate in free after-school classes, weekend and summer programs, tutoring and mentoring. AP courses and college courses for high school students will also be available, as well as programs for educators and parents. Considering our capacity, it is reasonable to expect a sustainable impact on the lives of at least 3,000 to 5,000 of the city's public schools 9000 students each year. Few if any existing programs in Westchester County or even in New York State have the capacity to drive meaningful change on a comparative basis. The Northeast STEM Starter Academy at Mount Vernon, or NSSA. The name best reflects our core mission: to deliver critically needed STEM educational resources to children in Mount Vernon, the entire Northeast and beyond. While working on securing the necessary funded needed to build the needed capacity, we continue to deliver our various programs at one of the many public school locations within Mount Vernon. The Public School Board and school leadership has partnered with us to enable the delivery of our classes, Over the last six years, we have delivered more than 60 different STEM classes to more than 2200 students. Our 2019 Summer STEM camp hosted 160 3rd through 11th graders, up from 27 , seventh grade students who attended the same two-week program in 2014.
