Mission Statement
The Herps Alive Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to saving, rehabilitating and caring for unwanted, neglected and abused reptiles and amphibians, and to finding new homes for them when possible, with an emphasis on educating the public.
About This Cause
Our mission statement says it well, but it doesn't say it all. The Herps Alive Foundation (HAF) is HAF museum, HAF Nature Center and HAF Pet Store. That's right, the parts exceed the whole. We are an all-volunteer organization (well, our Executive Director IS paid $1/month) that has taken in over 2,000 reptiles and amphibians in its five years of existence. We have found homes for nearly 1500 and currently house over 300 animals in a public facility in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, that is now open (at no charge to visit) five days a week. We have expanded from three to four to five days of operation due to public demand. We currently house several 14' plus pythons, a three foot caiman (alligator cousin),an 80 lb. tortoise, numerous large monitor and tegu lizards, axolotls (aquatic salamanders) and even a 1/2" Puerto Rican Tree Frog called a coqui. We have hosted dozens of educational programs for school groups, scouting groups, community organizations and others and also maintain a strong outreach presence, averaging over 70 off-premises events annually. Although we work with all local humane organizations and officers, we receive no public funds. We pay the bills through adoption fees, sale of donated equipment and supplies, donations, sponsorships, education programs and special events. We are licensed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the Ohio Division of Wildlife, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the city of South Euclid. We are members of the U.S. Association of Reptile Keepers, the Northern Ohio Association of Herpetologists and the Zoological Association of America.
