Mission Statement

PLUS ME Project activates the art of personal storytelling to build confidence in youth as they pursue college, career, and life goals.

About This Cause

We believe everyone has a story that matters. However, many young people doubt they have a story to tell or simply have not found a way to unearth it. Our mission is to change that. Story is universal. This flexible tool of self-reflection and connection is at the core of each PLUS ME program. We provide guest speaker presentations, storytelling and writing workshops, life skills workshops, and professional development training. Our work is designed to support social-emotional wellness within educational communities which include students, educators, and parents. PLUS ME sends trained facilitators into schools and community spaces to deliver our storytelling programs directly with youth (aged 11 - 24) throughout Southern California. We use the My Story Matters Journal, a 100-page guided personal narrative tool, to support students in self-reflecting on the elements of their own stories. Youth then take their discovered stories and turn them into college personal statements, scholarship applications, or job interview preparation. The My Story Matters Scholarship was created to encourage high school students to write and share their own personal narratives. We offer 10 scholarships each year (5 for LISTEN and 5 for IMPACT) to high school youth in Los Angeles. All recipients are celebrated in-person where they share their stories live to an audience at the scholarship reception events. We also host programs at the PLUS ME Storytelling Center, located in Highland Park, for the community.
