Mission Statement
Engaging the community to provide for the basic needs of children and teens in foster and kinship care.
About This Cause
Helen’s Hope Chest is a program of Mesa United Way that was founded in 2009 to provide basic needs to Arizona’s foster and kinship children and the families who care for them. Helen’s has helped thousands of youth by providing quality clothing, shoes, hygiene items, toys, books, and school supplies at no cost. All items are given to the children for free, reducing the financial burden on foster and kinship families. Helen's Hope Chest provides more than just clothes for kids in foster/kinship care. It is important that every youth who comes through our doors feels a sense of confidence, acceptance, and dignity. The boutique environment allows kids to choose their favorite items and feel like they are shopping at a regular store. The extensive sorting process guarantees that kids and youth are receiving new and like-new items that are current and stylish. Helen's Hope Chest Back to School program provides backpacks and school supplies to over 1,000 youth in July. In December, HHC holds JaKelle’s Christmas Box where foster/kinship parents are able to choose gifts, books, stuffed animals, and stocking stuffers for each child. In 2024, HHC provided clothing and gifts to over 4300 children. As a QFCO, in 2025 contributions made to Helen’s Hope Chest qualify for state tax credits, up to $618 per individual or $1234 for married couples filing jointly.
