Mission Statement
OUTsider is an Austin-based nonprofit organization that showcases transmedia art, performance, and scholarship from the LGBTQ+ community: art that is outside categories of identity as well as medium. Our mission is to champion LGBTQ+ artists through supporting interdisciplinary programming that transcends standard performance formats. This is accomplished through our annual festival every February, year-round workshops, and our artist-in-residence program.
About This Cause
OUTsider’s annual festivals are five days of LGBTQ+ transmedia art, scholarly panels, and artist residency. The festival draws 2000+ participants to the heart of downtown Austin’s east side, and presents 35+ local, national, and international performers alongside academic panels with both scholars and artists in conversation. Festival components include a ticketed 5-day performance series, a 3-day symposium, and OUTsider’s artist-in-residence program. OUTsider serves to: 1) foster dialogue through enlightening and entertaining the public on LGBTQ+ identities and histories; 2) celebrate the creative and cultural heritage of LGBTQ+ artists, championing and protecting their public voice; and 3) transcend standard showcase formats, forging bridges between art forms and communities where none yet exist. As there is no other festival like OUTsider in existence in the US, it has become a gathering spot for LGBTQ+ (and ally) artists, academics, and general audiences from across the country.
