Chicago Community ToolBank

Mission Statement

The Chicago Community ToolBank serves nonprofits, schools, government agencies, and faith-based organizations by lending high quality tools to support their work in the community. Our warehouse holds a massive inventory of hammers, ladders, drills, wheelbarrows, and more types of pliers than you knew existed. The Chicago ToolBank equips staff and volunteers and empowers nonprofits to do more and larger projects in our communities. Our tools are available to nonprofits at 3% of the retail cost per week. A shovel costs a nonprofit 50 cents for the week! This means groups can equip volunteers to build playgrounds, paint schools, clean parks, plant trees and gardens, and build ramps for veterans at a fraction of the cost. $100 worth of tools will cost $3 for the week! The Chicago Community ToolBank has a vision – we believe that access to reliable, quality tools should not stand in the way of volunteers who want to make a difference in our communities. We look forward to working together!

About This Cause

The Chicago Community ToolBank stewards a diverse inventory of tools and equipment for partners to amplify their work to strengthen and celebrate our shared community. We maintain a large tool inventory so that our community partners need not shoulder the burden of procuring, storing, maintaining, tracking, repairing and replacing tools for their essential work. Our partners are local non-profits, community and neighborhood groups, faith-based organizations, schools, municipalities and more. For three cents on the dollar per week, these partners have access to the tools they need to achieve their most ambitious goals. As an example, $1,000 worth of tools costs only $30 to borrow. Whether we are supplying trash grabbers and rakes to help clean up a neighborhood in or providing paint rollers to help create the mural on Chicago Public Schools, the ToolBank is positioned as a partner and force multiplier to empower all community partners throughout our region. Each year, tools in the hands of local nonprofits plant hundreds of trees, clear countless trails, clean our rivers and streets, and provide our community the opportunity to be good stewards of the environment. The very nature of our tool lending program is predicated on reuse of tools rather than constant purchasing. This method leads to increased use of individual tools and a reduction in overall consumption of tools purchased new. The ToolBank is a steward of reusable resources. Our goal is that the ToolBank becomes the natural hub of all things community-related. We believe that this access to reliable, quality tools should not stand in the way of volunteers who want to make a difference in our communities. Our tools have built playgrounds, cleaned up vacant lots, created community gardens, and renovated buildings in Chicago. The benefit continues to be proven by the number of agencies accessing tools, the number of volunteers equipped with tools to complete community projects, and the value of tools borrowed that would otherwise have had to be purchased. By supporting the ToolBank, you support the missions of all the organizations who borrow our tools. We equip volunteers and staff to do more and larger projects in the Chicago area. Thank you for your help in supporting the ToolBank.
