BENCH MARK PROGRAM

LANCASTER, Pennsylvania, 17603 United States

Mission Statement

Bench Mark Program is a strength-based family of mentors who use fitness as a tool for leadership development with at-risk youth.

About This Cause

Bench Mark Program operates a free gym facility for at-risk youth in Lancaster City, PA. Young men and women between the ages 14-24 are referred to the organization by probation officers, school counselors, therapists, and other community organizations. Upon entry into the program (which is completely voluntary) youth are given the option to work with a mentor or exercise on their own. Youth receive a lifetime membership to Bench Mark Program. The gym is open on a consistent daily schedule, making it an easy activity to integrate in participants lives. As youth become comfortable in the gym facility, they meet mentors who invite them to work on setting goals. Those goals often include staying out of trouble, completing probation, improving grades, and securing employment. Bench Mark mentors are trained to work with youth in achieving those goals. Bench Mark operates a number of different programs that are described in detail on our website. Bench Mark is proudest of its growing track record in employing youth who have been successful in the program as mentors within the program. In a number of cases, youth who first interacted with Bench Mark while incarcerated in the juvenile detention center have progressed through all of the organization's programs and returned as part-time and full-time employees.
