Located in Wilsonville, Oregon, World of Speed is an educational motorsports museum and learning center using historic racecars, boats and motorcycles to tell the story of motorsports culture and leadership – around the world and in the Pacific Northwest.
About This Cause
World of Speed opened in April 2015 in Wilsonville, Oregon, with a mission of education and entertainment through the celebration and preservation of motorsports. A unique, state-of-the-art educational motorsport museum, archive, and learning center, World of Speed features more than 50,000 square feet of exhibit space and hands-on activities designed to tell the story of motorsports history and culture, including the engineering and technological advancements surrounding motorsports. The Museum is the only one in the Pacific Northwest to celebrate many forms of motorsports (automobiles, motorcycles, and hydroplane boats) and much of its collection originates from this region. Over 140,000 people have toured World of Speed since opening with the Museum typically seeing thousands of visitors each month. The Museum gallery showcases 80 to 100 vehicles on loan from private collectors and institutions, along with over 750 artifacts and images from the Museum’s permanent collection in stand-alone exhibits or integrated into vehicle-focused exhibits, as well as three race car simulators. Current special exhibits include: Mario Andretti: Racing Royalty – A look back at the illustrious career of America’s most successful race car driver, including cars from some of his most famous wins and exclusive videos of Mario and his famous racing family; Daytona Banking – A 31 degree banked-turn replica of the original tri-oval course featuring four vehicles from legendary NASCAR drivers; ZERO TO 1000 MPH – Explores generations of speed enthusiasts attempting ultimate land speed records along with automobiles from land speed record breaker Mickey Thompson’s fleet. Wall of Sound – A sensory experience, the exhibit explores the intertwining relationship between cars and music from the 1950s to 1980s; PIR – An exhibit of artifacts and images dives into six of the main elements of Portland International Raceway including Indy, sports car, drag, and motorcycle racing, as well as its beginnings and Rose Cup race series; and Andy Granatelli – A life in Motorsports – Celebrating the life of Andy Granatelli, land speed racer and perennial Indianapolis 500 contestant, and the man who made STP a household brand. The gallery also houses the Start Line Club with kid-focused interactive educational games and activities to engage kids at multiple development levels, especially in the Super Service Center where kids can perform vehicle maintenance on a two-sided kid-sized car up on a lift. World of Speed also provides a variety of STEAM-focused, week-long summer and winter camps for students and an ongoing school tour program with online curriculum. For younger kids, Otto’s Storytime Garage combines reading with craft, art, or musical activities, all with an automotive or transportation twist! The Archive collection, approximately 4,000 cubic feet in total, is made up of digital and print photos, artifacts, audiovisuals, papers, artwork, video and film, technical drawings, publications and much more, and is shared onsite, offsite, and online, creating over 1,800 unique interactions with the Collection monthly, besides the 750+ collection items on exhibit in the Museum’s gallery. The Learning Center inspires current and future generations of students, automotive enthusiasts, and professionals through education, community engagement, and exploration of career opportunities centered on the automotive industry. The Learning Center features high-tech classrooms and educational automotive bays with car lifts and tools that promote under-the-hood interactive education and career engagement. Currently, we host 134 students from nine area high schools as part of our commitment to Career and Technical Education. World of Speed also provides a variety of STEAM-focused, week-long summer and winter camps for students and an ongoing school tour program with online curriculum.
