Mission Statement

The Brooklyn Book Festival's mission is to celebrate published literature, further a passion for reading, and nurture a literary cultural community through programming that connects readers with local, national and international authors, publishers and booksellers. To this end, the Brooklyn Book Festival develops original programming that is hip, smart, diverse, inclusive and collaborative and presents free and low-cost events including the Brooklyn Book Festival Day, BKBF Childrens Day, Virtual Festival Day and Bookend Events with cultural partners.

About This Cause

Brooklyn Book Festival is a registered not-for-profit, 501c3, and all contributions are directly applied to the expenses of presenting our programming, which is free to the public. Once a year we present the largest free literary festival in NYC, which is recognized as one of the premier book festivals in the nation. The festival is a robust 9 days including special literary Bookend events presented in all five boroughs, a Children's Day for children, families and teachers, the Main Festival Day and Literary Marketplace and our new Virtual Festival Day. More than 450 authors from around America and across the globe - ranging from iconic and prize winning to emerging voices - come together on discussion panels, in spirited conversations and debates. Every genre from fiction to non-fiction, poetry, graphic novels, young adult, lifestyle, culture and children's categories are represented. The Festival celebrates and nurtures readers and promotes authors and publishers. The Festival is especially known for its unique conversations and its attention to diversity and inclusion. Authors come from around the country and around the world. Contributions are greatly appreciated to help support the Festival's expenses and help us keep it free. Free is especially important in NYC where so many cultural experiences come with ticket fees which can exclude the participation of lower income people.
