Mission Statement
The mission of the Portland Chinatown History Foundation is to honor, preserve, and interpret the history and rich cultural heritage of Portland's historic Chinatowns. The Portland Chinatown Museum is operated by the Portland Chinatown History Foundation, a 501c3 not for profit charitable foundation registered in the state of Oregon. It's goals are to Honor Portland Chinatown's Past, Celebrate its Present, and Help to Create its Future.
About This Cause
The Portland Chinatown History Foundation is campaigning to establish Oregon's first museum about Chinese American history, art, and culture. The role and influence of the Chinese is one of Oregon's hidden stories. Despite anti-Chinese legislation and racial discrimination, Chinese workers were the earliest and largest non European immigrant group to settle and to build Oregon. By 1900 Portland's Chinatown ranked as the second largest Chinatown in America. We are proud to share this history through our museum to be located in Portland's Chinatown, which will provide a new cultural attraction while contributing to the preservation and revitalization of Old Town Chinatown during a time of rapid transformation. The museum will also embrace Chinese American youth and contemporary Asian American art as a powerful expression and exploration of contemporary Chinese American identity and culture.
