About This Cause

The Portland Chinatown History Foundation is campaigning to establish Oregon's first museum about Chinese American history, art, and culture. The role and influence of the Chinese is one of Oregon's hidden stories. Despite anti-Chinese legislation and racial discrimination, Chinese workers were the earliest and largest non European immigrant group to settle and to build Oregon. By 1900 Portland's Chinatown ranked as the second largest Chinatown in America. We are proud to share this history through our museum to be located in Portland's Chinatown, which will provide a new cultural attraction while contributing to the preservation and revitalization of Old Town Chinatown during a time of rapid transformation. The museum will also embrace Chinese American youth and contemporary Asian American art as a powerful expression and exploration of contemporary Chinese American identity and culture.
