About This Cause
Our mision is to provide a safe and supportive environment where youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, develop confidence and skills for life in the Dominican-Haitian Community. We aim to run inclusive, sustainable programs for children and youth in the Dominican Republic that can be replicated throughout impoverished global communities Centro Guanin was founded after our founder Severino Hernandez came across a YMCA in his global tour as a proffesional basketball player. That was 20 years ago and since then Centro Cultural Guanin has built up a community center in the heart of one of the most impoverished area's in the Dominican Republic. This community center serves many purposes and all of them serve the community that has been forgotton. We first begin to care for children during the early stages of infancy through our nursery and daycare program. Students are then enrolled in our bilingual education center, where they learn Spanish and English, are tutored in basic elementary-school subjects, and are introduced to art, theater, music, and sports, thanks to the dedication of local teachers, assistance from the Dominican government, and support from volunteers worldwide. The Guanin Center is a unique place and serve's as a volunteer center equipped with a humble dormitory allowing volunteers to come from all around the world and help out on specific projects, support our staff in our education center and daycare, and learn culture directly from the community. Recently we have even been able to build a Medical Center to cater to the basic needs of the community who would otherwise need to trek by foot over 3 hours to the nearest hospital. All of these things combine for a place where we can accomplish our mission of supporting a community to become independent and share the uniqueness of Dominican culture with the world.
