Mission Statement

Preventable and treatable eye diseases are prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Sight for Souls supports the development of eye care services for such persons in Ethiopia.

About This Cause

Sight for souls was established by 2 American academic ophthalmologists, John Kempen of U. Penn, and Scott Lawrence of UNC-Chapel Hill, along with an Ethiopian Colleague, Demissie Tadesse, who is highly respected in East Africa. An application was filed with the Ethiopian Investment Commission in October 2014 to permit Sight for Souls to establish an eye care center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital city. Currently, Sight for Souls is working to meet all the requirements of the Investment Commission as well as the health care licensing authority. Beginning in 2016, comprehensive eye services will be offered to patients from all economic strata by using a system of cross-subsidies similar to the Aravind model in India. Beyond direct patient care, Sight for Souls intends to train local ophthalmologists and mid-level optical practitioners, thus multiplying their effectiveness in combating eye disease in Ethiopia. Presently, funds are needed to support the planning process, the acquisition of land in Addis Ababa, and building costs.
