Mission Statement
Our mission at the Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action (HAPA) is to catalyze community empowerment and systemic change that places the health of 'āina (the land that nourishes us) and the well-being of people above corporate profits. To achieve this, HAPA operates within four key program areas: 1) Fair & Sustainable Food Systems, 2) Community-based Resource Stewardship 3) Reclaiming Democracy 4) Social & Economic Justice. HAPA's mission is vital for the protection of Hawaii's environment, ecology, and food production. We operate across four interconnected domains: food systems, environmental stewardship, socio-economic structures, and governance systems within Hawaiʻi. We underscore the interconnectedness of these systems, highlighting that challenges within our food systems do not exist in isolation but are intrinsically linked to broader social, economic, and environmental issues. Through education and advocacy within these areas, we aim to foster understanding and support for our mission.
About This Cause
The Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action (HAPA) is a dynamic organization with a rich history of advocacy for environmental justice and public health in Hawaiʻi. Our roots lie in the fight for basic pesticide protections, a battle that saw us standing shoulder to shoulder with frontline communities, advocating for their right to a safe and healthy environment. Over the years, HAPA has evolved to address the interconnected nature of environmental, social, and economic issues. While we continue to advocate for improved pesticide protections, our work now extends beyond this initial focus. We are committed to sharing vital public health data with those most affected by environmental hazards, ensuring that communities are informed and empowered to protect their health and well-being. At the same time, HAPA recognizes the importance of sustainable and indigenous agro-ecological practices in creating a healthier and more equitable food system. We actively support and center regenerative and indigenous agro-ecological projects and initiatives, understanding that these practices not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also uphold cultural traditions and promote economic justice. In all our work, HAPA remains steadfast in our mission to catalyze community empowerment and systemic change, prioritizing the health of 'āina (the land that nourishes us) and the well-being of people over corporate profits. We are dedicated to creating a future where all communities in Hawaiʻi can thrive in harmony with the land.
