About This Cause
MY FACE (Males and Females Acting in Confidence and Empowerment) was formed to train women in personal development and leadership, including communication, esteem-building, personal affirmation, responsibility, self-respect/honoring oneself, respect for others, acknowledging/encouraging other women, trust, relationship-building, team building and problem solving. Historically women have lagged behind the majority population, socially and economically, and thus have been generally powerless and disenfranchised. They have not been encouraged to be strong leaders. Our vision is that all women will be prepared to live and thrive abundantly, proficiently and effectively in the contemporary world. Since our inception, we added young men of color to our target audience because of their enormous need for mentoring and guidance. Our primary goal is to empower families to compete in the marketplace, creating opportunities for improving the economic status of low-income families. Immediate objectives are: Satisfying basic needs, i.e., food, clothing, shelter; Proficiency in effective communication; Personal leadership and empowerment; and Utilizing technology. Long-term objectives are: Sufficient employment; Adequate education; and Developing efficient budgeting/ financial literacy skills. Each year, we increase the number of individuals we mentor. In our first full year (2020), we worked with 20 families. In 2021, we mentor 40 heads of household, and with each coming year, we will increase our numbers, continuing work with those who are already in our program and adding others, as necessary. Our mentees are recommended by guidance counselors at each of the schools in the communities we serve, so most of the families live in that same neighborhood.
