Mission Statement

Evermore is a nonprofit dedicated to making the world a more livable place for bereaved people. Bereavement is largely undocumented, and thus a “hidden” (or invisible) problem in the United States and throughout the world. In addition to the immense personal tragedy people experience, it’s a problem with vast health, economic, and social consequences. Evermore advocates for meaningful policy change, advances bereavement science, and cultivates innovative bereavement programming among communities across the nation. We envision a world where all bereaved people experience a healthy, prosperous, and equitable future. We are accelerating lasting societal change using data and science to drive policy and practice change for all bereaved individuals and families.

About This Cause

Evermore is a national nonprofit dedicated to making the world a more livable place for all bereaved people. We are changing policies and practices within our communities — and across America — so that all bereaved people can achieve a healthy, prosperous, and equitable future. In addition to the immense personal tragedy people experience, bereavement is a problem with vast health, economic, and social consequences. To address these consequences, Evermore is accelerating lasting societal change using data and science to drive policy and practice advancements that are grounded by the lived experiences of individuals and families. Bereavement Impacts Our Health, Social, and Economic Stability and Solvency Bereavement — the death of someone meaningful in our lives — is increasingly a direct concern for millions of people. Given the concurrency of mortality epidemics – homicide, overdose, suicide, maternal mortality, and traffic fatalities – grief and bereavement is an everyday reality for every neighborhood in America. Unbeknownst to most people, bereavement is a significant risk factor for poor health and premature death. It also impacts economic opportunity, redirecting life trajectories downward, and has major spillover effects at every stage of life. Bereavement, for example, is associated with academic failings, substance misuse, teen pregnancy, incarceration, suicide attempts, suicide, and premature death — and a host of other public concerns. Evermore is Unique and a Pioneer Evermore is a “field catalyst,” cultivating a new and emerging ecosystem to facilitate lasting social change by using data and science to drive policy and practice advancements grounded by the lived experiences of all bereaved people. Field catalysts are rare because new fields of study or work do not emerge often; they do so when social or environmental conditions demand them (e.g., climate change efforts in the 1970s). According to the Bridgespan Group, a global philanthropic management consulting firm, field catalysts bring a deep understanding of the problem, seek durable population change, have an organizer’s mindset, and maintain trusting relationships to achieve that change. In addition, most field catalysts are severely underfunded, needing to raise two and a half times their current funding levels. Evermore’s Achievements Evermore’s work tackles systemic barriers and creates the infrastructure facilitating policy and social change for all bereaved individuals. Since January 2020, we have: - Secured three federal appropriations actions related to bereavement (FY21, FY22, FY23, and FY25 final language is pending), - Facilitated the first federal report on grief and bereavement and the first federal meeting on the issue, - Advanced or supported bereavement policy with the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Department of Education, the Social Security Administration (SSA), among others, - Facilitated introductions between federal agencies to ensure better care and resources, - Initiated a federal commission to standardize therapeutic practices related to grief (in the absence of standards, unqualified and generally interested persons are allowed to “clinically practice” mental health bereavement care without proper training), - Led a coalition to secure paid bereavement leave in President Biden’s agenda, - Grown a following of thousands across the United States of our weekly newsletter with an open rate between 30-40%, - Established three affiliates in Texas, Hawaii, and Oregon, with headquarters in Washington, D.C., - Synthesized the first Bereavement Facts & Figures, produced original data identifying a 20-year high in parentally-bereaved children, collaborated with leading scholars, and have been highlighted in textbooks and peer-reviewed publications. ✦ Evermore is not a pilot or concept; it is a proven organization with demonstrated outcomes. ✦ Evermore is non-partisan and works with both political parties. Our work has been covered by many top-tier media outlets, and we were recently featured on PBS NewsHour's Brief But Spectacular.
