About This Cause

Heartland Counseling Services, Inc. 501 (c) 3 was founded in 1977 by psychologist, Dr. Stanley Reiss, to serve individuals and families struggling with mental health and substance abuse in the tri-state area of Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Since its physical location was located in Nebraska, the state reached out to Dr. Reiss in the early 1980’s requesting that his agency become a serving partner of Nebraska’s Region 4 Behavioral Health Services and he agreed. Since then, the mission at Heartland Counseling Services, Inc. is to provide quality mental health and substance abuse outpatient therapy, education, community service programs, and prevention services to individuals and families in the Nebraska counties of Dakota, Dixon, Burt, Thurston, Wayne, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Holt, Keya Paha, Rock, as well as, surrounding counties in the states of Iowa and South Dakota. Heartland Counseling Services, Inc. originally become a community mental health center for Nebraska and serves 11 of 22 counties in Region 4; however, in the past year, Heartland expanded its boundaries to anyone whether they are a resident of the United States or not. Nebraska residents who have no health insurance are able to utilize a sliding scale for payment in order to gain mental health and substance abuse services. Now there is a federal sliding scale that has developed according to federal guidelines; therefore, anyone that does not have health insurance can receive mental health and substance abuse services despite where they live or if they are a citizen or not. Heartland Counseling Services, Inc. recently opened a fourth site in Valentine, Nebraska with assistance from the state of Nebraska. Other locations include, Ainsworth, O’Neill, and South Sioux City. HCS provides an array of services that include, but that are not limited to the following: mental health and substance abuse evaluations and counseling, 24/7 crisis response team, intensive outpatient program, tele-psychiatry, community support services, a day rehabilitation program, therapy at Dakota County Jail, DUI/OWI classes, and prevention classes at the Boys and Girls Club of Siouxland, South Sioux City Community Schools, Homer Community Schools, Emerson Hubbard Schools, and Wakefield Community Schools. Most recently, Heartland has started partnering with schools to have school based mental health services; these schools include South Sioux City Schools, Emerson Hubbard Schools, Oakland Craig Schools, Lyons Decatur Schools, Wakefield Schools, and O'Neill Schools. With a lot of hard work and dedication with staff, Heartland has overcome huge fiscal obstacles and become viable. Furthermore, in the past fiscal year, HCS provided services 2000 individuals. Other agencies that HCS partners with include, but are not limited to, Dakota County Jail, State of Nebraska Probation, NCCCP, CSADV, Street Project, Coalition to End Homelessness, SHIP, Growing Community Connections, Siouxland Mental Health, South Sioux City Police Department, Dakota County Sheriff’s Department, Dakota County Mental Health Board, Training Addictions Specialists, Haven House, Women’s Empowering Life Line, SCIP, Mercy Child Advocacy Center, and Siouxland Family Center: Head Start.
